Vintage Mechanical Ice Cream Dipper scoop for hand made sandwiches. This ice cream sandwich dipper was manufactured by the Automatic Cone Co. Of Cambridge Massachusetts and is called an ICYPI (pronounced I-C-Pie). This springless style scoop was invented by James Denaro and it was apparently produced between 1924 and 1930.
According to Wayne Smiths Ice Cream Dippers book this scoop was made of German silver. The end of the scoop is slightly rounded with a beveled edge both making it easier to push the scoop into the ice cream and then depressing the handle would eject the ice cream into a cone shaped like a sandwich pocket made by the Pioneer Ice Cream Cone company. Both sides of the scoop read; ICYPI - Automatic Cone Co - Cambridge, Mass - Pat. The wood handle has a pin through the bottom portion which is the dark spot. This version probably preceded the spring version. It measures about 11 in length and the scoop portion measures almost 3 ½ long by 2 ½ wide and ½ thick.
It is in very nice condition with minor use wear. Overall it's a clean old ice cream scoop and not a reproduction.
